One of my favorite books by one of my favorite authors is Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell. I am reading it for second time now. Here is a qoute from the first chapter of the same title...
The painful irony is that those who make this accusation (studying hard is "acting white") are themselves "acting white when they perpetuate a redneck culture from a bygone era. Even such a modern ghetto creation as gangsta rap echoes the violence, arrogance, loose sexuality and self dramatization common for centuries in white redneck culture, andspeaks in exaggerated cadences common in the oratory of rednceks in the antebellum South and those parts of Britain from which their ancestors came.
