Some Articles and Sermons on Suffering

I have had a couple of people comment on my post regarding Debbie Maken's Book, Getting Serious About Getting Married. I wanted to post some articles on Suffering and Singleness for anyone interested.

Hello,
The other day, in my discussion of the Debbie Maken book on marriage, I recommended a couple of books that had good chapters on singleness. There was another even better book that I forgot to mention then and I wanted to tell you about. It's called "Loves Me, Loves Me Not: The Ethics of Unrequited Love" by Laura A. Smit. It deals alot with singleness and states quite plainly (on page 77)that, in light of Jesus and Paul's teachings, singleness should be the default setting for Christians. Quite opposite to Maken, the author states that the burden of proof should always be on the decision to marry (that is, that there should be godly reasons for doing so). She also includes an excellent apendix which discusses the relationships between singles and the church and some of the problems there. She actually says the same thing I said about how the church's equation of marriage with adulthood promotes immaturity among adult singles. Anyway, just thought you might find the book useful or interesting. It's published by Baker Academic.

Peace,
Gordon
